WoAF - Game Session 25

Onboard the stolen Moon-Nazi UFO, Jacob and Vallnam were at the controls, the former piloting, the latter navigating.  Their organic-pressure suits absorbed the sweat that would have otherwise drenched them as they attempted to teach themselves how to maneuver the craft.  As they drove the ship towards Kitt Peak, they were still debating what course of action, among the many possibilities, would be best, given the fact that in approximately 8 hours four more Nazi UFOs, manned by actual hostile Moon-Nazis, were due to arrive at Earth.  And that was not a good thing.  Given the speed at which they could travel, and the enormously destructive weapons they possessed, a 4:1 fight would likely see them dead, and lay waste to large swaths of the planet in the process.  They needed a strategic response.  The options they debated with the team were, one, fly their stolen ship to Tibet where the ancient Mentarian Temple of the Sun was located, and hope that the Grand Masters would be there and could and would overwhelm the Nazis.  Or, two, fly the ship over Las Vegas and hope that the Shadow King there would engage in a war against them.  Or, three, fly the ship to the Black Wind V facility and hope that Brain V might deign to vaporize their minds.  Or four, fly the ship back to the moon and give it back to the Nazis in the hope that they would be nice about it all and leave Earth alone. None of these plans seemed completely sound and so there was a hot debate about each one over the Telepathic link that was being maintained between all the members of the team. As the conversation continued, far to the north, still in Panguitch, Sam, Guns, Linda and Fred were manning the AGV and had finally arrived safely at Garfield Hospital.  Linda and Pita were planning to meet in Panguitch and take Rocket Bikes to the northwest in order to hopefully find an answer to the meaning of the strange reoccurring dreams she'd been having since first leaving on the Black Wind V mission.

"The problem," Jacob was saying, "is that we don't want the Nazis to come to Earth at all. Despite the fact that they'd have 4:1 odds, with presumably more experienced pilots, they'd also have to notice that Earth is a wreck, and a juicy target for conquest.  They'd have no problem dominating Federation Command with four of these ships.  And besides, we know that there's another, hmm... let's see... well, at least thirteen ships still on the base where we commandeered this one.  So our best bet, it seems, would be to haul ourselves into space and try to draw them away from Earth.  Though of course, we're likely to get destroyed shortly after making contact.  I mean of course I expect we could potentially take out one of their ships, maybe two if we're really lucky... but even if two of them survive, they'll still be in a fine position to take a gander at Earth and find out how vulnerable we are.  Damnit."

"We could take the UFO to Tibet. The Grand Masters of the Mentarian Order in the Golden Temple have the best chance of taking them on, I should think," commented Pita.  "At the very least, it ought to catch them by surprise.  I'd place my bets on the Mentarians being able to handle them.  The Shadow King, on the other hand, would probably try to incorporate them into his own forces. And Brain V, well... who knows what the hell he would do!?  That's a total toss up."

"That may be so, but remember, the Nazi's may have prior knowledge of the Golden Temple," pointed out Lieutenant Brisbane.

"Um, what?", said everyone in unison.

"Well, it isn't common knowledge, but during WWII the Nazis sent expeditions to Tibet in search of a route to the so-called "Inner Earth".  They were hoping to find a path to ancient secret cities such as Shamballah, Agartha, and Shangri La.  In fact, at the end of the war there were found among the ruins in Berlin the bodies of a number of Tibetan Monks who were believed to be from the Golden Temple."

"Wait.  Are you telling us that the Nazi's infiltrated the Mentarian Order and took it over?!" asked Jabob incredulously.

"Hail Hydra?!" queried Pita with a laugh.

"That's not clear.  In fact I strongly suspect it may have been the other way around.  The Tibetans may have infiltrated the Nazis, and perhaps once they found out what their leader was really trying to do, maybe they attempted to mitigate the damage.  It was rumored among a few people at the time that the Tibetans in some way influenced Hitler's poorest decisions towards the end, and may have been instrumental in ending the war by influencing Hitler to corner himself.  Remember, that war was really touch and go, and had Hitler played his cards well, which at first seemed assured, the outcome would have been very different.  New York might have been renamed New Berlin, and the Third Reich may have had a shot at at thousand years.  But I'm afraid there's no way for us to know that now.  No one found out the answer to that at the time, and then the Ultra-War obliterated any chance we might have had of figuring that out. The point, though, is that we can't count on the Nazi's knowing nothing about the Golden Temple.  They may know all about it, and be quite aware of what the Grand Masters can accomplish."

"Ah. But still, that doesn't preclude swinging the UFO over there.  The Mentarian Grand Masters are still a force to be reckoned with.  And it may be our best chance of getting the Nazis back out of the picture," commented Samwise.

They then discussed the option of flying the UFO over Las Vegas in the hopes that the Shadow King would take the Nazis down.  To facilitate this Jacob proposed that Lt. Brisbane, who spoke fluent German, might be able to convince the Nazis flying the UFOs that they must attack the Shadow King's forces.  In the process of discussing this the team recounted everything they knew about the Shadow King, that he was some kind of ancient inhuman creature, like a Manticore, rumored to have been awoken from its ages long slumber beneath the earth by the Ultra-War.  He commands an army of Lizardmen, and has the Power of Domination over the minds of people in the region, such as the sinister Mayor Mutmaw of Seligman, Arizona, and his crew of brutal posse-men. And then three was the matter of the Talon Fisted Monk, and the Chain of Thanatos.  These details peaked Brisbane's interest, as well as the fact that it was the Golden Crusaders who seemed able to ward off and actually fight the monster.  In the end they concluded that trying to influence the minds of the Nazis by having Lt. Brisbane pretend to be Hitler was more likely to fail than not, as the Shadow King, whom Jacob kept calling "Satan", would probably be capable of overwhelming their minds in any case.  The thought of the Shadow King getting his hands on the UFO's was too great a risk.

And so the debate when on.

Meanwhile, Lt. Brisbane had been invited aboard the UFO by Jacob.  As he boarded the antique, and yet strangely advanced vessel he whistled through his teeth. Since the ship had been lodged at the secret Nazi Moon-Base (Eisenhelm) for several decades, unknown pathogens were a statistical possibility, and so Brisbane came aboard wearing a Level 4 Hazmat Suit.  Vallnam gave him a tour of the ship, and he was duly impressed.  Jacob pointed him to the brass Schematics Plate that was lodged under the Pilot's Control Station.  Since he was fluent in German he had no problem translating it into English.  He took images of every detail of the ship, paying special attention to the Schematics Plate.  It had to be imaged from several angles as there was a 3D component to the plate's design.  When finished he stood up and admired the ship approvingly.

"Fascinating," he said with satisfaction.  "I notice several things of interest.  One, Stealth Mode can be activated while in flight, though it requires maintaining a steady velocity, which effectively makes the ship internally stationary.  To answer your earlier question, once activated. no, not even the other ships can see it as there are no sensors that exist onboard to detect it.  I think it is theoretically impossible for anyone to detect the ship, at least using the laws of physics that we know of.  The second thing, and since you never mentioned it I'll assume you simply don't know, is that there is an automatic pilot aboard the ship named 'Selbststeuerung', which translates, roughly, as 'Robot-Pilot'.  You activate it by flipping these two switches here," he said pointing to a couple of small red flip switches on the overcrowded dashboard. Jacob took a mental note.

"Well, that is all very interesting," said Jacob enthusiastically.  Having the ability to go into Stealth Mode during flight, so long as they maintained a steady velocity was good to know.  And having a Robot-Pilot was ... well ... they weren't sure if that was such a good thing to try.  Who knows what devious tricks a Nazi-Robot might have up its sleeve.  They decided that was to be used only in case of extreme emergency as a last resort... if then even.

With the additional options revealed, the team debated the plan further.  They tentatively leaned towards the idea that the best option would be to take the UFO up and out of Earth's atmosphere, head at full blast to the moon, flip the stealth mode on as soon as they're at steady velocity, and hope that the incoming UFOs don't notice them.  Those four were still 8 hours away and still very close to the Moon.  Brisbane suggested that they might be able to execute the orbital maneuver on the far side of the planet, and thereby hide their intentions from the four incoming Nazi ships.  Once in Stealth Mode they'd cruise towards the Moon, and once beyond the halfway point, they'd switch off the Stealth Mode to attract the Nazi's attention.  If all went well they would realize they'd been tricked and turn around to chase them all the way back to the Moon.  Linda suggested that if they waited an hour or two after the Midpoint, they'd have that much time ahead of their pursuers to wreak whatever havoc on the Eisenhelm they could.  All of this met with the general approval of the team.  And so they saluted as Lt. Brisbane departed the vessel with two hearty handshakes and a salute, and they said their good byes.  It was not at all clear they would ever be seen on Earth again.

As this was taking place, a couple of hundred miles due north, the township of Hatch, just south of Panguitch, was beginning to suffer under a barrage of heavy artillery as the two encroaching armies battled it out while staggering in enormous lines northward along the valley passes.  All hell was breaking loose along those two massive columns of warriors.  The southern flank were composed of Lizard Men manning tanks and heavy equipment.  To the north was thin but determined line of humans with a motley assortment of weapons and armor, fighting tooth and nail for every inch of ground they lost. The air was torn by a cacophony of exploding ordinance.

The people of Hatch had frantically gathered their goods and already fled northward along Route 89 heading towards the momentary safety of Panguitch.  The town itself was taking a lot of collateral damage from stray shells, but there were few people left behind to witness it.  Building and houses, roads, farmsteads and offices were indiscriminately blown to smithereens as artillery landed amid the fleeing troops as they dashed in zig zag patterns northward along 89.  Behind them the battalions of heavily armed Lizardmen rampaged forward, gaining ground with every barrage.  The sounds of the battle could be heard from Panguitch.  And it was making the people there mighty nervous.

Bruin Hilda was was piloting the Heavy Mech, known as "The Rhino", south along Route 93, and had just passed the town of Ely.  As advised earlier by Jacob, she had been keeping a deliberately slow pace, about 10 mph.  They had decided to avoid Garrison, given that the horrors of the Skeleton Circle were still lingering as nightmarish memories in the her and Pita's minds.  Instead of taking the southern route, they went East, along 50 East.  However, once news about the battle going on south of Panguitch came via their Telepathic link to the others, Bruin Hilda stepped on the gas and planned to arrive in Panguitch in 45 minutes, instead of eight hours.

Samwise, Guns, Linda and Fred were stationed with the AGV at Garfield Hospital in downtown Panguitch.  They were surprised and relieved to find out that the Antiviral Medicine was working to bring a sizeable percent of patients in the town back from the brink, and restore many of them, more or less, back to normal.  So their earlier mission to the Great Insect Mound had born good fruit after all. This was a huge victory, as there was now reason to hope that the spread of the virus could not only be stopped, but actually reversed.  However, the Antivirus was not yet perfect, as some patients, including their friend Dr. Mordesh, were not responding to treatment, and in some cases were even made worse by it.  Doctor Mordesh, for example, had to be sealed in a glass cage, having gone full-Zombie as a result of the first test of the Antiviral medicine.  They looked on in horror at his completely altered visage.  "It's horrible," said Sam as he watched Dr. Mordesh rage blindly at nothing through the one way glass, his restraints nearly tearing free from their bolts.

Throughout Panguitch, nervous survivors of the viral plague, those who could at that point think straight and follow instructions, were busy gathering belongings and piling personal goods on carts and other makeshift vehicles preparing to flee  the incoming armies.  The people who had suffered the Zombie-Mutation were less capable than the Animal-Mutants, the former being barely able to understand what was going on, while the latter had achieved a far higher level of intelligence than normal, but like Charlie from "Flowers for Algernon", had been cast back down to earthly spheres of intellect. Many among them with forlorn, slightly animalistic faces piled their pitiful belongings onto their rain drenched carts and prepared for departure.

Samwise and the others observed these things from within the hospital.   Guns was staring at one of the screens through which a high magnification camera had zoomed in on a street corner.  He saw frightened people in various states of disarray trying to assemble the courage to run away.  It was a pitiful sight.

"You know, Captain," he said to Sam, "we ought to be down there helping them folk, don't ya think?"

"Yes, I think you're right," replied the good Captain.  However, as they passed one of the Hospital offices, they heard a heated debate.  Sam stopped at the door and listened in for a few moments before stepping quietly into the room.  Guns followed behind him, checking the time on his micro-mini phone.  It was getting on towards later afternoon.

There was a fierce debate among the doctors in the room. Some thought they ought to be preparing to flee Panguitch, while others were determined to stay. Dr. Rigby, who had taken over the command when Dr. Rogers left with the Black Wind V Team, had been put in charge of the Antiviral Development Group.  That team insisted that they had to stay.  For one thing they were still working on perfecting the medication.  It was a tedious and error prone process, and at this point they still had a 21.5% failure rate, and a 11.8% mortality rate, which was completely unacceptable, and even dangerous.  In some cases the patients had amplified effects effects as a result of the Antivirus, leading them to dreadful states of deformity, and creating what Rigby termed "Super-Mutants".  This was definitely not a good thing.  The virus work had to be completed.  Everyone was completely positive about that.

Unfortunately, the equipment they needed was either too heavy, or far too delicate to move easily.  They were compelled to stay to complete the work, despite the incoming military forces which were likely to overrun the town soon, and possibly destroy it.

"We think we are close to a solution," said Dr. Rigby, "but it will take a few more days.  We must try to to hold out, and hope that the destruction above doesn't derail our work.  We have generators on Sub-Zone 5 that should have enough fuel for two weeks.  We have enough food to last.  The only question is how severe will the fighting be.  And can we find a way to obscure our presence so we don't attract any attention while we work."  They planned to work in Sub-Zone 4, about 300 feet below the hospital.  If only they could isolate a reliable cure for the virus before it was too late!

The other group, lead by a Military leader named Dr. Hamilton, were insisting that everyone leave because the knowledge of how to effect the cure, the formulas, and the technical expertise could not be replaced, but somehow or other the equipment could.  They were certain given the size and ferocity of the armies involved that the hospital would be overrun and destroyed, and all of the value of their research over the past several years would be destroyed with it.  They wanted to escape with the data, and the expertise and live to recoup their losses another day.

The debate went back and forth without resolution, and so Samwise decided to interrupt.

"Doctors and Officers," said Sam in a raised voice, "on behalf of Federation Command, may I please interrupt your debate?  I think I may be able to help you find a way clear of your dilemma, if you'll give me a chance."

He positioned himself as arbiter of the debate and listened again carefully to both sides, giving each representative a chance to speak, and clarify their views. Both sides made very good points, and the variable that set them apart was an unknown... how severe would the fighting over Pangutich be?  In the end he devised a recommendation.  A few of the doctors who would be willing to risk their lives for the mission should stay to continue the research.  They should migrate as much of their equipment as possible to Sub Zone 5, and work there under strict Code Silence protocols.  The rest, and those doctors on Rigby's team who could reconstitute the research elsewhere, were copy all relevant documentation and and leave with Doctor Hamilton's team heading north.  This would give them collectively their best chance of finding a cure. Dr. Rigby and Dr. Hamilton both agreed, as did the rest of the doctors, and so everyone got busy with preparations.

Now Sam, Linda and Guns headed out into the town to help the refugees.  They didn't think there would be much danger involved as yet, as the military forces were still south a ways, and most of the residents of the town at this point were recovered, while those that had an adverse reaction to the Antiviral Medicine were being held in Sub Zone 2 of the hospital.  They passed Fred in the parking lot as he leaned against the AGV smoking something foul smelling.  He said he'd stay and watch over the AGV, and jutted his chin out in a show of determination.  No one tried to dissuade him.  And so they casually saluted as they exited the compound through the fortified gateway.  They noticed that the wind had picked up and the sky was getting dark.  In a few minutes they heard peels of thunder.  A storm was coming in, and people might have trouble, so they made their way into the town at a brisk pace to look for people to assist.

The town's people were in various states of disarray.  The ex-Zombies were wandering around lost looking for the most part.  They weren't violent, but they didn't quite know what to do, or where to go, or what to bring with them.  Their brains were still in something of a fog. One old woman in torn blue overalls held a broken doll in her hand as she trundled along the street with a few others of her kind.  On the other hand, they saw people with animal characteristics, not nearly as severe as the last time they were in town, looking slightly less lost, and collecting bundles of belongings and loading them on cards and wagons.

As they passed a small pale blue house along a side street they saw an elderly man with a young girl sitting on the porch looking at a small table.  He had a deck of cards in his hand and he was placing a card on the table.  They weren't sure why the two of them were doing this, as it seemed they ought to be getting prepared for the journey ahead, not playing cards.  The wind kicked up a notch as they passed, and a gust blew a branch that whirled past Linda's head.  The girl on the porch, she noticed, had catlike features, and the old man looked like he'd recently been a beagle, or a dog of that sort not long ago.  They didn't appear to be preparing to leave.

"Aren't you two getting ready to evacuate with the others?" asked Sam as he walked up the bared wire enclosed path to the house.  The they ignored him, and continued to focus on the cards that had been laid out on the table.  A bead of sweat fell from the man's forehead and landed on the table.

As Sam walked towards them he noticed that the wind was wild everywhere, but was strangely still around these two people.  Everywhere else the winds were howling, kicking up leaves and branches, and sending debris flying... but on this porch... not a whisper of wind could be seen.  He looked down at the table.  There were Tarot cards laid out in a circular pattern.  He'd just placed a card in the center of the circle.  The two of them stared with gaping eyes at the card.

"Sir," said Sam, "you must prepare to leave Panguitch."

But the man acted as if he didn't even hear Sam.  Guns followed close behind him peering at the table from over Sam's shoulder.  Sam looked down at the table, and saw the card that had just fallen from the man's hands.  On it were images that caught his eye.  It was a strange image.  A scorpion at the top of a circle, a black horse on which rode the a cowled figure carrying a scythe.  People fleeing from a fire, having the look of zombies. A starry, starry sky filled by a pale moon... at the top the word Death was crowned by another word "OBITUS". Although he tried to avert his eyes, he was drawn in. He looked ever more intensely at the image... it almost seemed to be moving, in the sky of the card he saw a black raven flying, and in the distance a volcano was erupting.  He saw a tree with yellow flowers swaying in the foreground, while a zombie wearing a bishop's miter and vestments was giving a silent and unholy malediction.  He became lost in the scene and began to feel he was part of it, as if it was all around him, as the vision of the card swelled outward and encompassed him, the porch, the town, and the whole world.  He lost all sense of time, and would have fainted away in a despair of horror had he been able... but he was suspended, held in place by some timeless nameless force, empty of all hope, of all light, of all life... it was just as he had felt outside of Garrison that day when they rolled up on the Skeleton Circle.  Unholy Despair engulfed him.  Guns had already fallen deeply into the card and was entirely consumed by its vision. His face was ashen, his eyes sunken in, his lungs collapsing with a gasp and a sigh.

Linda, fell under the influence of the Death Card, too.  But her reaction was less severe than the others, perhaps because she was further away from the card, or perhaps her Mentarian habits had conditioned her to maintain at least some control over her own mind at all times.  Or perhaps she was just lucky. It's hard to say.

"Sam?  ...Sam, are you ok?" asked Linda in a whisper that conveyed the fear she felt.  "Guns, are you ok?  Is everything ok?"  Her voice sounded very far off, and Sam could have easily forgotten all about her.

Sam struggled to push out words through his lips. "I'm seeing Death on the card... Death.... Death... It is all Death, isn't it, Linda?"

Meanwhile, Pita was still Telepathically linked to Linda on a private line of thought that the two of them had been sharing for some time.  He noticed that her presence had suddenly fallen off, and her mind became very quiet.  He boosted the Telepathy with an extra effort.

"Linda! Are you ok?  What's going on over there!? Snap out of it!" he demanded.  She explained distantly what she was seeing around her, and the call of the card, and the vision of death as it engulfed her.  "The others can't move.  Guns has completely fallen into it... he looks like he's about to die, or perhaps he's died already, I don't know.  There's an old man and a girl... they're both entranced as if the card is holding them suspended in space..."

"Can you shoot the card?" asked Pita.

"I don't know... is that a good idea?... what will happen if I shoot the card?... there's a void in the wind around the porch Pita... it's howling everywhere else but here..." she said as her mind began to fade away.

"Linda1  Listen to me!  Turn on your Mind Shield," ordered Pita, but though she tried, she couldn't manage it. It was too hard to resist the lure of death's terrible pale call.  He thought furiously about what to do.  Her skills were diverse, but her will power was subsiding fast.  Soon she'd fall away into the black nothingness before her.  He remembered she'd complained about having selected one annoying skill she had spent way too much time practicing at the Academy.   It was called "The Glitch".  It paired with "The Knack" but had the opposite effect.  When used it would cause small processes, computers, engines, or mechanisms to fail for seemingly no reason.  She had mentioned how useless it had turned out to be since no one wants things to fail, of course, they want them to succeed, she'd said ruefully a the time.  He smiled as he remembered her pouting about it.

He summoned up an extra dose of Telepathic energy and yelled, "Linda, use the Glitch!"

With the the last ounce of energy she had to devote to anything at all, she lifted her little fist and brought it down feebly on the table summoning "The Glitch".  The Queen of Hearts must have been looking over her in that moment, because as luck would have it, she tripped on the step as she tried to pound the table, and her stagger gave her fist an extra force, which thereby caused the table to bounce, and the cards all flipped up into the air, and off the top of the deck another card fell face up directly on top of the Death card.  On it was a Golden Shining Lion within the face of the sun, and a young boy on a white horse holding up a goblet of wine.  At the top of the card was written the name "ELDRICK".  It landed over the Card of Death... and suddenly the silence was broken.  The porch was instantly engulfed in a whirlwind of such force that the the cards, and the table itself, got swept up into it, and birds were shrieking and cawing frantically as they were pulled upward in it's great spiral, clouds parted in great dark silhouettes, and in a long stream the cards vanished swirling upward into the heavens and disappeared.  There was a flash of light and a clap of thunder! The old man and the girl both fell to the ground, gasping in amazement, as the party members stumbled backwards down the porch steps, and fell onto the ground.  A tree next to the house had been struck by lightning and caught fire.  Everyone scrambled to their feet looking around in amazement.  No one was hurt.

"My goodness," said the old man to the girl, "my goodness!  My goodness!  We must go!  We must go now!  Hurry Alissa! Get your things!  We must go with the others and escape this town!  Hurry!  Hurry!  Get your things!" To Sam, Guns and Linda he said "Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!" as he ran inside.  "We will be coming soon!  Thank you!  Thank you!" and as the man dodged inside the wind slammed the door shut behind him.  And that was the last they ever saw of the dog man and the cat girl.

... Not far away, to the north of Panguitch, Bruin Hilda piloted "The Rhino" past the Great Insect Mound.  It was about two miles east of their position on 89.  Pita zoomed in with his Vizi-Screen and saw that it was swarming with vast clouds of insects.  Billions, maybe trillions of them.  All around the mound was a vast array of vivacious flora and voracious fauna.  Creatures were born, lived and died within days instead of years, birthing, devouring, and dying so suddenly that evolution itself seemed alive with purpose there.  Even the vines writhed as they ensnared animals, and with their thorns drank their blood.  It seemed that every form of life was intent on devouring one another, and by rapid frenetic reproduction, creating one horrifically virulent generation after another, each slightly different, more virulent than the last.  Pita looked away from the dizzying spectacle.  Fortunately, the boundary of the crazy fauna was a desert floor that was so toxic that no living thing could wander across it for long without perishing into dust.  Such was the nature of the Eco-Weapons that had been used around Panquitch during the Ultra-War...

Bruin Hilda wanted to avoid the mound.  She decided to stay steady on 89, and then cut east on Airport Road about two more miles south.  She flew steadily at an altitude of 15 feet and kept focused on the road.  They wound their way to the military base at airport.  Soldiers came running out.  "The Rhino" was their last operational Mech, and on it was their last Thermobaric bomb, code named "Daisy Buster".  And more importantly to everyone was the fact that their Major Sekston was aboard.

"Alright people," blared Bruin Hilda over the loud speaker.  "We're coming down. We have Major Sekston knocked out in the back.  We had to give her a sedative, which was a dose of Rohypnol.  Give us a few minutes to open the hatch."

As Pita exited down through the hatch carrying Major Sekston by the feet, he glanced around.  All of the soldiers surrounding the Mech had their pistols drawn and were pointing them at him.  He remained calm and continued carrying her down the ladder.  It was a bit awkward.

"Gentlemen," he said, "instead of pointing your guns at us, why don't you help me get her down?  I could use a hand here."

"Oh no," responded the young Lieutenant who had been temporarily put in charge of the Base while the Major was off on the mission.  "We got some very strange radio messages about the Major from someone we do not know, just before you arrived, and you're going to proceed to carry her out nice and slow.  Then we're going to find out exactly what's going on here."

"We're already carrying her out nice and slow," responded Pita, annoyed by the insinuation.

"Keep going, just like that," answered the Lieutenant. "No sudden moves."

Pita continued to carry her down by the legs with Bruin Hilda carrying her by her upper torso.  Getting down the vertical ladder was something of a challenge, especially with all of those guns pointed at them.  But they managed, and when the soldiers had put the Major on a stretcher, Bruin Hilda provided the medical information involved with the dosage of the drug, what the remedy drug and dose would be, and tried to calm the Lieutenant down.

"We got some very strange messages, and you need to explain them to us.  We were told that the Major, and you, may be compromised, and we need to know exactly what does that mean?" said the Lieutenant through grit teeth, his gun pointed at Bruin Hilda's head.

"Well, you understand the abilities that Dr. Rogers has.  We were out there facing a creature that has even stronger abilities than Dr. Rogers."

The Lieutenant looked at her doubtfully.  "That's not possible," he said.

"That's the reason that Dr. Rogers volunteered to join the mission," Bruin Hilda continued. "In our time there, it effected some of our members, including Major Sekston.  It seems to have released it's control over them for reasons that are not entirely clear.  It appears to have freed everyone, but at the time I had to sedate her in order to prevent her from harming herself or other members of our team.  She was, shall I say, devoted to the creature in a way that made our departure from it problematic.  Sedation was our only option at that point.  I'm sorry," she concluded, "but we had no other choice."

The soldiers looked scared.  And skeptical.  They didn't necessarily believe the story.  Bruin Hilda went on to reiterate which drug and what dose would be required to revive the Major quickly, and went on to say that large scale military forces were heading towards Panguitch and that there really was no time to waste.  In fact, in the distance to the south large earth shaking explosions could occasionally be heard.  The threat was real, and imminent. They all knew that.

The soldiers were looking very tense.  "You soldiers have this base to attend to and protect. We're leaving Major Sekston with you.  We must to return to the Hospital and rejoin our own team.  There's not a lot of time."

From the point of view of the Soldiers, however, there was no way to know if Bruin Hilda was compromised by whatever the strange being was, or whether or not her entire story was simply a fabrication.  They'd met Pita previously, and Major Sekston had taken a liking to him, that was clear.  But ultimately he was also a stranger, from a military structure that they had never heard of either.  Nothing about this situation was clear to them.

"We're going to need to detain you until we can verify your story," said the Lieutenant. Bruin Hilda accepted the fact that they had never seen her before, and though they did know Pita, they didn't know her, and since she was the one who appeared to be in charge, and they were not going to simply take the word of a stranger.  Aside from that, she reasoned that both she and Pita were members of Federation Command, which was an organization none of them had ever heard of before, seeing as how the Panguitch community was so far off the beaten track.  All of that, and the fact that numerous guns were trained on her and Pita, she acquiesced to his demand and agreed to remain put.

And so they revived Major Sektson with the counter-sedative.  It took about ten minutes.  When she came around the Major was confused.  She didn't remember much about what happened while she was under the influence of Brain V.  She only remembered vague dreamlike sequences, but above all she remembered her sense of undying devotion to the great Master-Mind.  She felt a sudden pang of loss, and in her heart she wanted to return to Brain V.

"Who's this?" she asked of Pita, pointing to Bruin Hilda.  She remembered nothing of their fight in the cockpit of "The Rhino", which was fortunate for everyone.

"I can vouch for her.  She's a compatriot of mine.  We've been on a number of missions together.  We're both officers in Federation Command," he explained, keeping a steady tone, and trying to sound like things were really quite normal and that there was nothing to be concerned about.

"Where is Doctor Rogers?" she asked.

He then told her the sordid tale of how they lost Dr. Rogers and Penelope in the desert outside of the Energy Station near the Black Wind V facility.  Major Sekston instantly decided that she needed to go and find Dr. Rogers.  Bruin Hilda offered the advice that she should catch up on what's been happening around Panguitch first.  Controlling her impulse to jump into "The Rhino" and fly north to Brain V, she agreed.  Getting more information about the current status was important. She was shortly informed of the incoming military forces and that snapped her out of her revere.  She began ordering her men to take a variety of preliminary actions.  "Pita, we still have our Daisy Buster, don't we?" she asked.

"Yes, we do," he replied.

"Good," she replied emphatically.  "We're going to need it."

"Are we free to go, Major?" asked Bruin Hilda.

"Yes, go ahead.  Stay in touch.  And thank you.  Keep us informed as to your progress.  And by the way, I will find Doctor Rogers."

"I understand," said Bruin Hilda, and with that she and Pita turned and walked down the tarmac towards the hanger where they had left their Rocket Bikes.

They grabbed two and blazed an arc through the sky over to downtown Panguitch.  They landed in the Hospital courtyard next to the AGV, where they found Fred, blowing smoke rings. They didn't last long. He gazed at them absently and said "Welcome back".  They exchanged pleasantries briefly, and then Bruin Hilda left to join Sam and Guns in town helping refugees prepare for the march north.

Linda rendezvoused with Pita, and the two of them, as previously agreed, hopped on the two Rocket Bikes.

"You ready for this?" she asked.

"I was born ready," he answered, and with that they blazed a long golden-yellow plasma trail into the sky heading northwest to parts unknown.  Her target was a place called Diamond Mountain. She pulled it up on her Vizi-Screen.  It was a place that she'd only ever seen in the reoccurring dream.  As it was the only clue she had, that is where she was heading.  And Pita was right behind her.

Meanwhile, as they sped out of the Earth's atmosphere, Jacob consulted the brass schematics plate and flipped a green switch, two yellow switches and rotated a ornately scored thin metallic wheel.  With this he flew the craft at low orbit around the dark side of the Earth, and set their path towards Eisenhelm.  He then rotated a glass ball, with rods of bronze holding it above an array of brightly illuminated vaccum tubes, and suddenly they were accelerated to 10,000 mph.  This was probably as fast as he could accelerate the ship without the internal stasis field  collapsing, and them being smashed against the walls and turned into people-soup.  Fortunately the organic pressure suits they'd obtained on the Moon also helped to keep them from experiencing horrific G-Forces, and between the two, they found that their ride was not entirely comfortable, but far from lethal.  He accelerated to 24,000 mph and flipped the Stealth Mode switch just as they slid out of the Earth's shadow.

Four hours later, the Squadron of four Nazi UFOs slid silently past them at 48,000 mph, approximately 12 miles away along the same trajectory, only heading the direction towards Earth.  So far so good.  Though Vallnam could see them on his Vizi-Screen as distinctly illuminated green blips, they travelled far too fast, and were far too distant for them to see through the diamond-glass port hole.  Jacob paced back and forth nervously staring out into the blackness of space.  There was no indication that they had been detected, and so in Stealth Mode they continued on toward the moon.  In another three hours they planned to turn off the Stealth Mode, which they hoped would attract the Nazi's attention and cause the Squadron to reverse course, abandon Earth and follow them to Eisenhelm whereupon they planned to mount as devastating an attack as they could devise.  They spent most of their time discussing what their plan of attack would be.

...Meanwhile, back in Panguitch, storm clouds had been gathering east of the town all day, and were gaining strength rapidly.  The winds were up to 60 to 80 mph gusts.  The caravan of refugees were moving as quickly as possible northward, but the going was hard.  Every ten minutes or so a squall of rain would cause them to have to halt on the road and try to find temporary shelter.  But within a few minutes the rain would stop, and they'd continue moving.

Sam's main concern was not the weather, however.  Through is binoculars he watched the Giant Insect Mound with growing concern.  It was alive with huge writhing swarms of insects, now billowing in long strands in the wind.  Not far up the road he could see clouds of mosquitoes had been moving from east to west,  propelled by the wind into undulating clouds that would disperse and then converge back in on themselves.  Zooming in he noted that the mosquitoes were unusually large.  Some as big as his fist.  He wasn't happy about that.  But at the the moment another ferocious rain squall hit, and this one was sustained for about a half hour.  There was no sign that the weather was going to improve.  In fact, it looked like it was about to get quite a bit worse.

They decided to hunker down in a number of fortified warehouses that were at the intersection of 89 and Airport road.  There were some eight hundred refugees in the forward group, and another thousand or so in the rear.  Although good Captain Samwise was hoping to make it further north than a just few miles, under the circumstances he ordered the military personnel to get the people into shelter.  They quickly filed into the warehouses, sealed the metal doors, and settled in for a long wait.  The storm became violent with lightning, sustained winds at 90 mph, and gusts up to 130 mph.  The team parked the AGV in an alcove next to one of the warehouses and remained inside the AGV watching the sky pensively.

Linda and Pita, now flying at an altitude of 2000 feet, observed the storm coming in from several directions.  Though they were on their Rocket Bikes and might have taken a chance to fly over the storm, the wind gusts at their altitude was getting treacherous.  A sudden gust of over 70mph at 2000 feet was enough to convince them to land and take shelter.  They had made it about 100 miles from Panguitch and were passing over the Burbank Hills just southeast of Garrison, Utah.  They looked for a spot to land.  As they didn't see any caves immediately they landed in a gully, grabbed some tarps from the Rocket Bike kit and constructed a makeshift lean-to.  As soon as the next break in the storm occurred they planned to search up slope to see if they could find a cave.  At the moment the wind and rain made it too hard to see, and exploring was not a practical option. There should be many caves in these hills, they thought but finding one would have to wait.  They curled up in their enclosure, as wind and rain buffeted the tarps mercilessly, and discussed the strange events that had occurred in the town just earlier.

"You know, Pita, that Tarot Card, really drew me in.  It felt very much like what we experienced when we encountered the Skeleton Circles.  I'm sure there's a relationship.  But this time it was different in a way I can't put my finger on.  Stronger, perhaps.  I felt like I was falling into an abyss of death, and yet at the same time it felt ... familiar.  Like I'd been there before. Or there was someone waiting for me there.  It was horrible.  The strangest thing, though, was that on the card there was an image of a tree with yellow flowers.  It was, I believe, a witch hazel tree."

"Witch hazel, eh?", repeated Pita absently as she rested her head on his shoulder.

"Yes.  But the strangest thing about it is that this same tree is also in the dreams I've been having.  And I have no idea why."

And as the two of them hid under the tarps the sky grew ever darker and the wind began to howl through the canyons with wild abandon.

And that is where we left it that night.

WoAF - Sunday Night One Shots - The Plane of Shinar II

Having escaped the arena amid the smoke and fire the four party members lead by Jay Hammond moved south along the Euphrates.  They came to the docks where scores of sailing vessels were tethered to small wooden piers, and bustling porters were busy loading and unloading goods for the city.  A steady stream of wagons and people were flowing along the road to the east gate of Ur.  The towers at the gate were sturdy square structures mounted by armed soldiers in their leather cloaks.  They all had bronze spears and daggers, and the party noticed that amid the commotion an increasing number of guards were occupying the gate area, searching people and goods as they entered the city.

Jay wanted to get back into the city and find Allen and Carlos, who had gone to the Ziggurat to search for literary treasures to bring back to the the year 2222 AD, which he estimated was around 6,000 years in the future.  As they were clothed in the stolen raiment of the locals, they could more or less blend in with the crowd.  They trailed behind a donkey cart filled with bails of hay being driven by an old man and a young woman they took to be his daughter.  They tried to sneak onto the cart in order to hide in the hay, but the daughter was having none of that.  She yelled at them in Sumerian, but her words were easy enough to understand, and translated roughly as "Get off our cart you thieves!"  Not wishing to draw attention to themselves among the guards at the gate, they held up their hands in gestures of contrition, backed away slowly, and headed back to the river.  Fortunately, the guards had not taken notice, and so they fled further south along a footpath that wound its way through the reeds by the waters edge.  The occassional serpent or crocodile slithered into the water ahead of them, but they had no trouble getting to a spot where the trail split into two paths.  One continued due south towards the gulf, while the other vanished into the reeds heading in the direction of the south wall of the city.  They took that path.

It wasn't long before they arrived at the South Gate and looked to see if they could find an alternate entrance.  They figured tangling with the guards at this point was too risky.  Having searched the walls beyond the gate, they found a three foot wide crack in the stone work that might have been caused by an earthquake at some time in the past.  The city was, at that point, already quite old, and such defects were not entirely uncommon.  This section had been hidden behind a mount of stones and brambles that had probably been placed there to conceal the gap.  Slipping inside, they found that it lead up into a long corridor inside the city wall.  It appeared to have been unused for some time, as the floor was covered in dust.  They speculated the corridor was likely only manned in times of war.  Heading west along the dark corridor they eventually came to a heavy iron grate that opened into the city.  It took considerable effort and a number of tries, but they managed to yank the iron grate out of the wall and slipped into the city streets unseen.

Meanwhile, Zord-Iak, the Star Powered Mage with the glowing black gem in his forehead, was attempting to persuade the party to help him on his mission.  He stated that he is was Emissary of the Elder Elkron, the gods who existed before the Young Gods, such as Enlil and Enki, whom he explained had came from a world known as Nirabu.  He futher explained that he represented the Elder Elkron, and that his ultimate goal is to free his Masters from their eons of imprisonment in "The Land of Eternal Shadow".  This he suggested would be beneficial to the world, as there are forces in the Cosmos that only the Elder Elkron understand and can deal with.  Allen and Carlos were both baffled by these statements, but they were said with such depth and conviction that they could not but believe that Zord-Iak spoke the truth, although they really had scarcely and idea what that truth really meant.

Allen decided to cut to the chase and asked him what his Mission was, and Zord-Iak told them that he had been sent by the Elkron of Death to protect a young man named Sargon.  He was the cup bearer of the King of Kish, a city to the north, and was in Ur attending the King's son, The Lion-Prince, Umashu-kar.  It is Sargon's destiny, he said, to rule over the first human Empire of the world, and should Lugal Sage-Si succeed in killing him, the world would be put in jeopardy.  He elaborated on the tale, explaining that Sargon had been illegally born to a High Priestess in the Temple of Innana, the Goddess of Love and War.  His mother hid him in a wicker basket and put him on the Euphrates, appealing to the Elkron to watch over him.  When the basket was found by the daughter of the King of Kish, the boy was taken into the palace and raised there by the Royal Gardener.  When he was 12 Sargon had a dream in which he was taken to a high place by Innana and placed on top of a tall mountain overlooking the whole world.  At the same time the King of Kish had been sent a dream in which he was drowned in a river of blood, while Sargon was lifted above him into the light, and placed on his throne.  It was for this reason that the King of Kish wished to have Sargon slain.  Hearing this, the party decided to help Zord-Iak and so agreed to help protect the young Sargon.

At this point Allen, who had been generally accepted as the leader of the AXE Team, wished to reunite and get all of the party members in the same place.  And so Zord-Iak sent a servant to go to where Jay Hammond and his group were located and fetch them to the temple.  Since they were in telepathic communication with one another, as this was one of Carlos' Mentarian Powers, they had no problem keeping in contact and transmitting information between the teams.  Once together, they were given priestly clothes with which they could move about without being required to speak, as priests were often known to take vows of silence.  Carlos, who could speak the Sumerian dialect fluently, was given a Chief Commander's military sash which allowed him to take charge of soldiers and enter any precinct.

They went directly and without interference to the Atrium of the Lion and found the Lion Prince.  This outstanding warrior was the son of the King of Kish, the most powerful city of Sumeria at that time.  With him was young Sargon who was acting as his page. The team took up stations around the atrium and Jay positioned himself with his sniper rifle on a rooftop from which he could shoot into the atrium if needed.  At that moment Lugal Sage-Si arrived and spoke with great friendliness to the Lion Prince, whom he wished to have as his Son-in-Law.  Sargon was told to bring them wine, and when he served the cup to the Lion Prince, Lugal Sage-Si , the King of Ur, stood up suddenly and menacingly behind him.  Sargon sensed the sudden motion, however, and spun around, stopping Lugal Sage-Si from taking any further action. The King, seeing that the young Sargon was extremely quick, sat back down and finished his wine, his eyebrows furrowed, his mood suddenly brooding. The party was ready to kill Lugal Sage-Si that instant, but it was not necessary as Sargon handled the situation for himself.

Later there was a banquet in the Great Hall.  The pages were all seated with their Princes at the great table, and food was brought out to them by servants on large ornately adorned silver platters and golden trays, all encrusted with rubies and sapphires.  Larry, on a hunch, followed the servant who is attending the Lion Prince and Sargon, and witnessed the servant boy pouring a small container of white powder into one of the goblets of wine.  As the lad carrying the heavily laden tray of dishes and wine goblets came through the archway to deliver his cargo, Larry tripped him.  The lad and his tray clattered to the ground, the precious and deadly wine splashing to the ground, useless.  The boy, terrified, stood up and with the right of a hunted gazelle in his eyes, bolted through an open archway.  Larry and Carlos dashed him, and finding him crying against a palm tree, asked him pointedly what had happened.  The lad mistook them for Priests, and told them that he was sure to die.  The two heroes demand to know why, and the boy, under pressure admitted that it was Lugal Sage-Si himself who gave him the poison to put into the wine to be delivered to Sargon. Larry, who was constantly in touch with Zord-Iak by telepathic link, asked if the boy could be saved, and Zord-Iak agreed to take him into the temple where he would serve the Elder Elkron from that day forward for the rest of his days (and this lad became the first of all Mentarians on Earth).  His name was Emil and so he went to Zord-Iak to serve him loyally from that day on.

Larry and Carlos returned to the the Great Hall and found Lugal Sage-Si brooding and angry, his eyes flashing malevolently at everyone in the hall.  The banquet finished early and Lugal Sage-Si announced that the Great Combat of the Seven Princes was soon to begin.   The contest, he said, must be completed by Midnight in order for any of the Princes to win his daughter's hand in marriage on the day of her birth.  His charming daughter on her dais was all eyes for the Lion Prince.

And so, the Lion Prince took proud strides out of the hall and he and Sargon helped him to put on his magnificent black and gold armor.  The party lingered nearby watching carefully for any sign of further mischief.  A messenger came from Lugal Sage-Si bearing a note for Sargon, requiring his presence in the King's Inner Throne Room.  Taking his leave of the Prince, Sargon went to meet the King, while the party followed stealthily behind.  The young hero entered the chamber and the door closed behind him.  Six guards stood before the sealed doorway.

This was very bad.  Sargon was alone with Lugal Sage-Si, and they knew that anything could happen.  They used their powers to overwhelm the guards but bad luck in the effort bewildered them, and so it far longer than they had planned to gain entrance to the chamber.  Perhaps an entire minute had passed!  Sargon could easily have been killed by then.

Meanwhile inside the chamber a battle had broken out between Lugal Sage-Si and Sargon.  The sounds of the two mighty men in hand to hand combat could be heard from outside.  When the party finally broke into the chamber they found the two men locked in a death embrace.  They were at the far end of the hall, and too far away to interfere directly, as the use of their pistols would have risked killing Sargon.  They could only watch the fight from a distance, and that with great anxiety.  Sargon, however, was indeed stronger than Lugal Sage-Si, despite his youth, and he lifted the great King over his head and threw him to the ground, breaking his neck.  The dull crack of bones echoed throughout the hall.  And Sargon stood over his enemy as a mightily lion would stand over his defeated prey.

He ascended the stairs to Lugal Sage-Si's throne as a crowd of palace guards and guests entered the Inner Throne Room.  At first no one was certain what would happen.  The King of Ur was dead on the ground at the foot of the stairs below the Throne and Sargon occupied it with such regal bearing that none made a move, or spoke a word.

Sargon announced that Lugal Sage-Si had broken the Sacred Law of Hospitality, disgraced himself before the Gods, and had tried to kill him with the mace that was laying on the ground near Lugal Sage-Si, and so, he said, he slew his foe with the Might of Enlil in his right arm.  He stated that witnesses beheld this treachery and he told the the party members, who were dressed like Priests, to validate his claim.  Carlos, who spoke fluent Sumerian, spoke on Sargon's behalf, and said that it was as the young hero had said.  And the people bowed to Sargon because he sat on the throne of Ur, and had defeated his foe by the hand of Enlil, and Enlil's Priest had vouchsafed his claim, and so Sargon became the King of Ur.  And thus began Sargon's fantastic career as the first Emperor of the world after the great flood that swallowed Atlantis.

The party slipped away and headed back to the Temple where they met again with Zord-Iak, who praised their good work.  They spoke for a time about their bond, and Zord-Iak confided in them some part of his own history, and they explained to him that they were not from another world, as he had thought, but from another time.  This surprised Zord-Iak but once stated, he understood and was glad.  He declared that he had come down to Sumeria bearing two Great Artifacts from the Eldere Elkron which he would leave in the Temple.  One was a great blessing and one a dreadful curse, he said.  The artifacts were inside of two large and ornately carved stone boxes, shut with waxen seals.  He told the party that their good works had earned them a great reward, and that he would presently return to from whence he came until he was needed again on Earth some day in the future.  And so Zord-Iak took the young man Emil, and told all the priests that he was to be obeyed as if he were High Priest, and Zord-Iak imparted to the young man in a flash all The Keys Of Wisdom and Power, and the 12 Secrets of the Elder Elkron.  Emil knew wisdom, and could foretell the future, and understood what the destiny of mankind would be.  He served in the temple as the liaison between the people of Earth and Zord-Iak for three hundred and twelve years.

Once Zord-Iak had departed, Carlos and Larry decided to open one of the boxes, hoping they would be lucky enough to the select the box of blessing.  They broke the seal, and there was a clap of thunder.  They slid the stone lid off and inside the found a human being laying within a silken shroud.  The man sat up slowly, and the shroud fell from him.  He had a head with a metal face, and a glass dome over his brain, into which they could see the flickering and flashing crystals as it were like lightning, and thin rays of colored light.  He was not human.

"I am Orrak", said the man with the crystal brain.  "I demand to know where the Emperor is, as I have come to serve him".

The team was unsure whether or not this was the blessing or the curse.  At first they tried to hide the fact that they knew who the Emperor was (as Sargon was not yet an Emperor, but Zord-Iak had told them that some time in the future he would become the Emperor of Akkad).  After asking a few key questions of Orrak they realized that they could not possibly know what the right thing to do was.  And so they they trusted in fate and destiny and told Orrak that the Emperor was Sargon, and point him to the throne room.  Orrak left immediately, departing out of the temple, surveying everything in his path with multi-colored rays from his eyes.  The people cowered before him and he went unimpeded to the Throne Room.

The party quickly grabbed some scrolls, and a few small artificats that they could carry in their pockets from the inner chamber and then took the southern road back to the plateau where they had landed earlier.  No one stood in their path, and the arrived at the reed circle where they'd first seen the Prince of Kish slay the lion in hand to hand combat. They put their hands on the Symbol of Return, and again the wrenching feeling pulled them forward in time.  No one saw as their forms vanished into a hazy blue streak.

They landed in the desert. Nearby was an enormous city protected by a giant wall covered in gleaming blue and gold tiles.  There they saw a great tower was under construction and almost completed.  They did not wish to stay there.  They'd had a belly full of the ancient world and wanted only to go home.  And so they touched the Symbol of Return.  Again there was the horrible feeling of being drawn like a strand of spaghetti through the Space-Time continuum, and they landed back in the year 2222 Ad in the Space-Time Transversal Chamber where they had started the mission what felt like 10,000 years ago.  No time at all had passed for those in the chamber, and the Commander of the operation stared at them in confusion when they declined to step through the portal and head out on their mission, having come back at the exact moment when they had departed.  It took some time to explain all that had happened!  And what a story it was!

The Commander and his team did a great deal of research in the following days, and found that the historical record showed that Sargon was a in fact a historical character, and indeed the first known Emperor on Earth.  Larry realized then that Orrakk was the progenitor of Altissimus XL-5000, and that the Mentarians who lived at the time of Sargon, and the fall of the Tower of Babel had founded their Order with the intent of watching for a very distant future incarnation of that incredible being.  Orrak, he concluded, was the first Artificial Intelligence on Earth, sent there by the Elder Elkron in order to build the next civilization after the fall of Atlantis.  What became of Orrak was a mystery, but based on their search through the historical archives, they drew the conclusion that the mighty mentality was likely buried in the fall of the Tower of Babel, and had never been seen again.  There were records in fact of several expeditions over the centuries devoted to discovering what was hidden in the ruins of that once mighty tower, but none of those expeditions ever returned.  And then the Ultra-War broke out in 2024, and all such ventures came to a permanent and decisive halt.

WoAF - Sunday Night One Shots - The Plane of Shinar I

Two heroes showed up (out of five) for our Sunday Night Elthos RPG "The Way of All Flesh" One Shot.  They leapt straight in with pre-generated characters.

Background
They start out in the year 2222 AD on a tiny uncharted moon of Saturn, gathered together in a top secret facility run by the Secret Order of Mentarians (think quasi-religious psionic scholar-warriors).  The Mentarians have for several thousand years been anticipating the rise of an advanced technological civilization.  One much like the civilization that the first Mentarians saw destroyed by the Great Flood; that of Atlantis.  Based on their experience they foresaw the creation of an Artificial Intelligence, like that of Altissimus XL-5000 (aka Alt-X). This Order had long ago understood what the future destiny of humanity very likely had in store, and had been preparing itself for thousands of years for this event through the practice of various forms of Occult Mystical Arts.  And so the Mentarians form the foundations of all such mystical orders and secret societies that our civilization has ever known.

During the Ultra-War (2024 - 2028 AD) Altissimus XL-5000 was created by a team of top scientists to stop the rampant War-AI that the Governments of the world had unleashed upon each other.  These War-AI were on the verge of finishing the job by wiping out all of humanity (and all other living things, eventually).  And so Alt-X (The Nucleus), and his array of Whole Mind Emulators (The Membrane), succeeded in trapping, deactivating, coopting or destroying all of the War-AI, and thereafter became the remnant of humanity's benefactor.

Over the following decades Earth was slowly replenished and humanity reclaimed and repopulated the world, turning it mile by mile into a pristine natural paradise under the wise and beneficent rule of Federation Command, and Alt-X.  A new form of government was designed with Alt-X's aid, and all industry and manufacturing were restricted to regions outside of the Earth's biosphere. They advanced outward into space and Alt-X began building a communications and power relay network throughout the solar system while human and Martian (more about them another time) colonies were sent forth to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

100 years later, in 2222 AD, a race of quasi-inter-dimensional beings, whom we know as the Plutonians (because they reside on that enormously frigid world, though we are led to understand that it is not their native planet), made secret contact with the Mentarians. They professed a concern about the advent of Alt-X, and wanted to know if any of the humans shared that concern. Indeed the Mentarians had always had that concern, and the Plutonians admitted that they knew this from their long observations of Earth. And so they agreed to work together to find out what Alt-X's true potentialities are.

Is Alt-X capable of going rogue and destroying all life on Earth, and potentially elsewhere? What are the potential outcomes of Alt-X's exponentially expanding intelligence, already far superior to humankind? This is what the Plutonians and the Mentarians desired to know. Because the outcome could be beneficial, or catastrophic. They determined to discover if there were any way for Alt-X's tiny human inventors to influence that outcome for the better. As it turns out, in the grand and incredibly huge scheme of things, it is after all a very important question. Humans, you see, created Alt-X, and as far as the other beings in the Galaxy are concerned, humans are responsible for it.  Nuff said.

The Plutonians, being supreme mathematicians, had long ago devised a method by which they could send themselves to any particular Time-Slice in the Multiverse using a method they call Space-Time Transversal. However, while they can slide anywhere in Space along the selected Time-Slice, they can not move through time in it at all. Thus they are able slide around the Space of the Time-Slice as if they are on a plane of glass, in order to observe anything and everything within the Time-Slice, but are unable to interact, or hear, or do anything other than go here and there and hither thither and beyond to look at things.  They can pass through matter as if it were mere shadow, and travel anywhere in the Time-Slice instantaneously. An amazing capability, indeed, though obviously limited in certain vital respects.

Humans, however, being fundamentally different on a metaphysical level, can, the Plutonians theorized, travel to any space-time coordinate in the Multiverse via the Space-Time Transversal Mechanism, but would be constrained once there to the fabric of Space-Time as soon as they "landed" at a given coordinate.   The Plutonians devised a plan to incorporate both capabilities.

During their meeting, the Plutonians suggested that they scout the Multiverse looking for tell-tale signatures of Alt-X in various times, places, dimensions, planes, and alternate universes, and when they found promising locations to  further explore, they could then send human AXE Teams to go there and find out more. The Plutonians would act as scouts, and the humans the actual investigators.  In order to arrive at the chosen destination, the Space-Time Transversal Mechanism would create what the Plutonians called "Symbolic Transmigrators", which appear to the Travelers as immobile hovering circular luminescent patterns which when touched would lead to the selected coordinates, and then on the other side when touched lead them back home to their origin point.  The journey itself, the Plutonians warned, was not expected to be entirely pleasant, but the humans should be able to survive it, given the nature of their material composition, and the strength and durability of human consciousness.

The Mentarians agreed to try it. And so, the Mentarians created a top secret base on a small moon of Saturn, and built the facility, hiding their actions from Federation Command and Alt-X, and with the aid of Plutonian technology shield the location quite effectively. The AXE Team was assembled from volunteers who had been reported as dead to Federation Command, and were selected according to their loyalty and appropriateness for the operation. This was to be their first mission.

And as such the Mission 1 goal was a simple test of the Space-Time Transversal Mechanism.  A minus10 minute time jump into the same room, where there were instructed to simply observe, and do nothing else.  It was unclear whether or not they would be visible to people currently in the room, and this is one of the elements the Mentarian leadership wished to test before sending anyone on actual missions.  They also wished to test the Transmigrator Symbol, and also to determine definitively that Time Ripples would not tear apart their current  timeline due to the Butterfly Effect, as some of the human mathematicians feared.  The Plutonians, however, were confident that their mathematical Theorems were perfectly sound and demonstrated that time flows more like a river than an arrow, and so it would be "difficult" to actually alter the time flow significantly, and only a dramatic change would actually cause a Ripple Effect.

The Mission
And so with everything ready, they turned on the great Space-Time Transversal Mechanism (an enormous machine built into the core of the tiny moon), the lights dimmed to a dark blue, the Plutonian in the enormous frozen container that was his body suit began to race out before them into the time-stream, and the members of our heroic band touched the glowing circular symbol that hovered in the air before them!  TTHWWAAAAAAAA....

And then there was a glitch.  A flash of yellow light appeared on the upper right corner of their peripheral vision along with a shower of orange sparks. Something had gone quite wrong. And so the party was hurled backwards in time, not ten minutes as planned, but 12,500 years into the past (~10,178 BC).

And so they found themselves landed on a great sand dune, in the middle of an ocean of sand dunes.  The Transmigrator Symbol hovered just above the sand.  They had no idea where or when they were.  Before anyone could say much more than "Gosh", they spotted a caravan of men, camels, and herds of animals struggling across the dunes not far away. These people sent two camel riders forward and they spoke to our heroes (there were six on the team, two played by Players, the others were treated as NPCs for this game).

The desert nomads spoke to them in an ancient tongue (the root-language of all human civilization) and the fact that some of them mystical skills such as Know Languages, they understood what was being said. And when it was perceived that our heroes were not unfriendly, a chieftain came and spoke with them. He pointed to a large wooden cabinet that the desert men were carrying on poles, and said that their God, Enki, was bringing them eastward to the Plane of Shinar in order to build a new civilization.

"Atlantis is fallen beneath the waves and is no more, but we shall create a new Atlantis upon the Plane of Shinar", said the elder with a bitter sigh.  And all his people looked eastward in anticipation.

He offered the heroes a place among them, but they declined. As one might expect, they had no desire to spend the rest of their days among the ancient primitives, and they wished to return home. And the only way for them to get there was to touch the Return Symbol, which hovered a few inches above the sand next to them, and could not be moved. They guessed that if they wait a bit, the equipment back at their secret base might be repaired, and they could use the Return Symbol to go back home... and so they watched as the Atlantean remnant passed over the sands and out of sight. There were some 3000 of them in all. They touched the symbol. Unfortunately, the repairs must not have been complete, as this shot them forward in time roughly 7900 years (~2,278 BC), and put them down in the Plane of Shinar, just south of the city of Ur, in the marshes of southern Mesopotamia.

From a crest of a low wide plateau surrounded by reed covered islands large and small, each dotted with an assortment of rough but sturdy reed huts, they saw the awesome and shining ancient city of Ur with it's enormous central Ziggurat, royal palace, marketplace, thick walls, roads and river boats, and thousands of people going to and fro from the city.

No sooner had they observed these things than they heard the sounds of men approaching near by. They hid in the reeds behind some rocks. It was a band of Sumarian warriors, lead by a magnificently adorned noble wearing beautifully crafted bronze armor. His men began beating the reeds round about with long sticks until a lion, roaring, sprang into the circular clearing. Our heroes peered from between the rocks and took witness as the great noble fought hand to hand with the lion, and slew it with his gleaming bronze sword. His triumph complete, the warriors hoisted the carcass onto their shields and carried it down the trail back towards Ur.

Our heroes decided there was good reason to explore this area, as all such knowledge that they might gain would be of tremendous value, both to the Mentarians, and potentially to Alt-X.  It seemed the great Artificial Intelligence craved any and all information of the past that might be gleaned, and paid very generously in Federation Credits for such.  This was doubtless because the Ultra-War had destroyed so much knowledge of the past that hitherto had been quite commonplace, but afterwards constituted great treasures of lost knowledge.

Having decided to explore while they give the repairs back at Mentarian HQ in 2222 more time, they stealthily pilfered some cloths that were drying outside a nearby hut, and so covered their armor and equipment with the long multi-colored robes that were common in the region. They made their way along the marsh trails until the got to the river where they met a withered and toothless ferry man. He was delighted to accept the payment of a small plastic Rubix Cube that one of the heroes was carrying, and ferried them to the outskirts of the great city.

It was fortunate that one of their members was in fact a Mentarian, and that one of his mystic powers happen to have been to Know Languages. And so he was able to speak fluently with the locals, and even assume the local dialect and accent. As it happened he raised no suspicions at all as he gleaned that King of Ur, Lugal-Sage-Si was celebrating his daughter's 16th birthday, and so the city was bustling with festivities, replete with a Great Competition to be had on the north side of the city.  No less than seven of the Great Princes of Sumeria would vie for her hand in marriage.  The heroes formed a plan. Two, Larry and Carlos, would head off towards the center of the city to try to sneak into the Ziggurat wherein they hoped to find a Library.  Meanwhile, the other four went to watch the festivities, and  intended to create a distraction which might give the two an advantage if possible.

And so, the four heroes watched the first combat between two of the Great Princes, of which one was the Lion-Slayer they'd seen earlier.  This battle raged without a decisive victory by either combatant for 9 rounds when one of our heroes, Jay, leapt over the fence and ran at the two Princes with his broadsword flashing in the summer sun!  Circling around to gain a position against the Lion-Slayer, he fought that Prince for 6 rounds, neither of them making a decisive victory. The other Prince had stepped back as he would never deign to fight a lesser man than another Royal Warrior (as was the custom in those days).  A number of Palace Guards closed in on the interloper, and would have slain Jay on the spot with their spears had it not been for the others.  As soon as they saw Jay was about to be surrounded and pierced through and through, they pulled out their Beam Pistols, fired several well placed shots that ignited various wood and cloth trappings around the arena, while one of them tossed a frag grenade deliberately outside of range so that it would create havoc without actually killing anyone.  They did not wish to tempt fate by overly disturbing the Time Stream by actually killing people in their own deep past.  Who knows what might result down the long centuries! The blazing beams of iridescent plasma, along with the sudden explosion that toppled a nearby wooden food-shed, so shocked the Sumarians that they fled in all directions.  Our heroes escaped to down to the Euphrates river amid smoke, and shouting and confusion.

Meanwhile at the Ziggurat the two infiltrators, stymied by the presence of a band of priests giving sacrifice at the base of the one stair that lead to the top of that massive building, blasted their way through the religious ceremony, scaring the guards witless, and then bum rushed past the priests. With their way cleared they ran up the stairs to the uppermost platform. There they found the entrance to the God Chamber of the temple.  The Temple Guards posed no threat as they fled from the fiery beams of their Lewiston Pistols, and so they entered through the enormous archway into the Great Hall of Enlil. There sat the enormous and august image of Enlil, God of Storms, upon his magnificent throne.  The chamber was empty.

The two heroes took a quick glance at the three doorways that lead further into the structure, walked past the great statue of Enlil and there entered an archway on the rear wall behind the throne.  Passing through a short dark corridor they came to a smaller chamber filled with books and scrolls, and lined with shelves on which sat statuary, and bejeweled platters of gold, and other incredible treasures.  There were priests in the chamber.  Three of them, with two Temple Guards.  They had retreated in haste into this room when they saw the strangers enter the outer hall with their weapons blazing.  Now they were besides themselves with fear of the deadly rays which emitted from the stranger's hands (so they thought in their haste).

However, before anything else happened, they saw a man step forward from the gaggle of cowering priests.  He had a black starshaped gem embedded in his forehead. Our heroes stopped. And stared. And were not at all sure what to do, as this man seemed wholly out of the ordinary.  He was most certainly not afraid, but approached them with great dignity, and gravity as if they had no power over him, but rather quite the opposite. His bearing was that of a God, rather than a mere mortal man.  They stood staring at him with raised eyebrows, ready for who knew what?

He spoke and declared himself to be "Zord-Iak, of Antares" in a low resonant voice that seemed to vibrate the very walls.  And when they tried to intimidate him with a shot from a beam pistol towards the ground before his feet, the bright orange ray was stopped in midair 10' from the Star Mage's foot, and vanished with a flare of bright yellow light at the point of contact. The black gem on his forehead glowed.  The heroes understood that he possessed a Force Field of some kind.

"I have come to your world out of an abiding concern for the future of your race, and your place in the galaxy," said he, "And you must join me".

And that is where we left the adventure, to be picked up in two weeks, if all goes well.

WoAF - Game Session 24

On route to Earth, Vallnam, Jacob and Bruin Hilda studied the schematics of the Nazi UFO very carefully.  They were inscribed on a metal plate just along side the main control panel at the center of the disk shaped capsule.  The ship itself was a charming mix of retro-tech and ultra-sophisticated engineering.  So much so, that one would not be incorrect to suspect that there is no way on Earth that the Nazi's could have created such technologies on their own volition.  For example, on the specifications plate it makes reference to "RotQuecksilber-Plasmawirbelmaschine", which is to say "Red-Mercury Plasma-Vortex Engine".  In addition, it's armaments include a "Blitzkanone" (Lightning Cannon), a "Flüssigmetall-Maschinengewehr" (Liquid Metal Machinegun), and a "Plasmastrahl" (Plasma Beam).  For armor, it sports a heavy Titanium-Steel Alloy hull, a Plasma Shield, and something called a "Faraday Field", though what that was exactly wasn't entirely clear from the diagram.  The controls of the ship were dials, and wheels, and there were assortments of vacuum tubes with hot white filaments everywhere.

It was the fantastic combination of retro-tech and ultra-sophisticated engineering that struck the crew members as both bizarre and charming at the same time.  But then, anything that would get them home to Earth might have engendered the same feelings in most of them.  And so they studied the schematics and watched as the moon receded rapidly into the distance.  The Earth came up much faster than they expected.  So much so that it was shocking to see how fast this ship could soar through space!  In fact, they no longer were aware that they were being towed by the invisible Modroni Space Ship's tractor beam.

Speeding at blistering velocities over the North Pole, they briefly spotted what looked like a gleaming translucent city made of enormous domes, crystalline spires, and illuminated by blue globular lights in the thousands.  They were moving far to fast to take a proper account of the site, but they were sure they'd seen an entire city cloaked in the vast whiteness of the frozen tundra.  Had it not been dark on the North Pole at the time they'd never have noticed it in a million years.

Down through the turbulent atmosphere they descended at incredible speed, the shielding of the ship blazing with coruscating flairs of light as tiny fragments of space junk were intercepted and disintegrated on contact.  They glided silently towards a band of mountains just east of the Bonneville Salt Flats.  On their screens they zoomed in on the mysterious Black Wind V Facility as a small clump of buildings near several rectangular turquoise pools of water, in the middle of the vast and perfectly flat white plane.  The early morning sun put a golden glow over everything.  Never was a crew so happy and delighted to see terra firma up close and personal again.  After their exile on the moon, they'd really learned to appreciate all of the lustrous beauty of our own dear world.

All knowledge of the Modroni had passed from their minds by then, and the only thing they knew was that they'd found Ling Brisbane and Vallnam on the Moon, that there was a secret Nazis base named Eisenhelm there, and that they managed to steal from them one of their eighteen flying saucers.  They remained in contact with Ling Brisbane through a telepathic link, and so they were conscious of her presence among them, but if they tried to think about why she was still on the moon, or how they escaped, or why she hadn't come with them, such questions were quickly vanquished by a complete and total loss of memory for those particular points.  Whatever was missing seemed neatly glued on both sides to other actual memories such that they didn't even detect that there were missing pieces. They simply passed over such concerns without thinking about it.  The Modroni had seen to it that they'd have no memory of them whatsoever.  And all other factors would be merged and interwoven together so that over time everything seemed as though they'd crash landed on the moon, rescued Vallnam, and left Ling Brisbane there with the Nazis for some unclear reason, with the intention of returning to pick her up after the dangerous mission to Earth was completed.  Or something.  They almost knew there was something.  But thinking about what it was completely evaded them.  And so it was that the Modroni Spaceship that had towed them to Earth at such blinding speed slid invisibly away  from their landing site, and sped towards the Black Wind V facility, none of them noticing or even suspecting that there had been anything to notice.  The Modroni landed with absolute silence in a desert rill near the facility and began very gingerly probing Brain V's outermost defenses.  The Modroni settled in for a long, tedious, and extremely cautious investigation.

Meanwhile, our heroes had landed some 122 miles due east from the facility on the far side of Mount Aire.  They got out and stretched their legs on the desert sands, their stealthy craft hidden behind the range of hills.  God, it was good to be back home!

After a short break, they began deliberating on how exactly to rescue Linda Brisbane and their other friends.  Apparently, from what they understood thus far, the Giant Brain, known as Brain V, or sometimes as "Brian", apparently, had completely knocked out the Mentarians among the ill-fated Black Wind V Rescue Team.  And then in the same instant commandeered the minds of all unwilling team members.  This was the case on both the Armored Ground Vehicle, and "The Rhino" their military mech from the Panguitch HQ.  And those who were so commandeered now were absolutely loyal devotees of Brain V.  They'd no more go against his will than they would cut their right hands off.  As far as they were concerned "Brian" was the best and brightest creature the Earth ever produced, and they'd follow him to the ends of the galaxy if he wanted them to.

And so, the rescue was going to be complicated.  That they knew.  And therefore they needed a good and solid plan.  And so they discussed it back and forth for several minutes, now that they were on the ground and could see, via their ultra-advanced Visualizers, where the vehicles were exactly, and who was aboard each one.  On the Rhino they found Pita was passed out in his seat at the Weapons controls, while Major Sekston was piloting the craft northward along Route 93.  The two gleaming white Ultra-Mechs and their attendant Drones were being controlled, presumably, by Brain V, and were flying ahead of them by about a mile, and moving at relatively slow speed so the team could keep up.  Rather like guards taking prisoners to their dungeon.

What they concocted was a bit of a long shot, and a convoluted one at that.  They decided to use the UFO's radio equipment to tune into a frequency that the AGV would pick up, and with that convince the crew that Brain V wanted them to turn south and head back to Panguitch.  They tried it, and after the second attempt wherein the crew became quite suspicious, it didn't look like it was going to work. Until, that is, they supplemented the effect with a boost of Psychic Persuasion.  Being Mentarians, and aiming at a crew of somewhat lesser minds, on the third try the effect was completed and the crew actually and fully believed the unlikely tale.  They were convinced that Brain V had contacted them by radio and wished for them to head south instead of north.  Voila. And so they turned their vehicles around and began to head south.

Meanwhile, the Moon Seekers flew the UFO to the Salt Flats and landed near the AGV in Stealth Mode.  They deposited Bruin Hilda as close to the Rhino as they could get her.  She blended into the scenery in a way that was so complete that no one could see her, not even the members of her own team, and even though they knew where she was heading.  This was a power she had learned from the Modroni while still on the moon, but as it was she couldn't imagine how she had learned this trick.  She crept silent as a door mouse to the foot of the Rhine and leapt onto the ladder as it flew ponderously by.  Climbing up she made it to the hatch.  It had a key punch code, but she obtained that telepathically from Ling, who knew it from the ancillary information she had picked up during her first contact with the members of the Black Wind V team.  It was strange how that worked out, as she had not intended to probe everyone's minds, but she felt the Modroni had somehow played a part in that event, though how was entirely unclear.  Or perhaps their skills had been slowly rubbing off on her over the many months she spent with them.  She didn't know.  But at any rate, she had picked up all kinds of reflections on each person's history, motives, thoughts and secrets during those few seconds in which she witnessed Brain V overwhelm the hapless team.  In fact that had only taken place less than an hour prior.  Which gives some idea of how fast the Modroni Ship could sail through space.  It made the Nazi UFO look like a paddle wagon by comparison.

When Brain V's two Ultra-Mechs pivoted to find out what their captives were doing, the UFO opened fire.  Unfortunately, their lack of experience caused them to miss the shot, and so the plasma beam shot wide and hit the side of Ferguson Mountain.  When it hit the ionic plasma field that had been slowly gathering for several days along the north face, the entire field went up in a huge fireball, and that caused the facility on the top of the mountain considerable damage as well.  Brain V was not pleased! And if anyone had been with him at the time, they'd know that this event caught him entirely by surprise.  And it was at this moment that he understood that somehow, other forces at suddenly come into play.  He was quite curious about that, and his super mind began searching for answers.

At that point the UFO crew decided to draw the Mechs off, and so they flew it out over the Salt Flats eastward and then arced high to the south.  Before they knew it they were blasting upward at 10,000 mph.  The UFO's Red Mercury Plasma-Vortex Engine hummed with quiet efficiency, and yes, it was that powerful.  Had it not been for the internal stasis field, and the quasi-intelligent organic Modroni  flight suits they were wearing, they'd have surely been crushed into a disgusting flat sheen of pulp against the inner hull of the ship.  As it was, they merely felt a rather uncomfortable sensation, and a bit nauseated for a few moments.  From their stations they could see on the view screen that the Ultra-Mechs had followed them, but their top speed was only 1,000 mph, and so the Moon Seekers had no problem staying out of range.  Having lead the Ultra-Mechs far enough away for comfort, they turned 178 degrees on a dime and flew back to the Salt Flats.  The UFO handled fabulously, though it was clear it would take considerable practice to get good at flying it.

Meanwhile, in the AGV, the crew members found themselves individually sharing a strange dream.  Each member who was called into the dream took the place of the same person.  A man on a mission.  It was during World War II, and the entire dream took place in black and white, as if in an old movie.  The man's name was Captain Terance Stevenson.  As the dream began he found himself outside a bombed out hospital.  His jeep pulled to a rough stop just outside the caved in doorway.  Men were scurrying over the rubble clearing out, carrying sick and wounded people to safety.  An elderly Sargent met him at the entrance, and explained in polite but terse terms the situation.  A bomb had fallen inside the hospital and was lodged in the ground unexploded.  It had landed ten minutes earlier, and if it adhered to the usual pattern it would explode in another five minutes on a time delay mechanism. He'd been called in to defuse it.  He clambered quickly over the rubble and found himself in a large open space with the sky showing through five shattered floors above.  Nearby on an open ledge formed by the 2nd floor just above the bomb was bed in which there lay a young man, probably around 9 or 10 years old.  A nurse was standing next to him staring down at the bomb below.  When Stevenson asked if they were stuck there, the nurse said that due to his condition the had doctor insisted that the boy could not be moved.  The nurse stared nervously at the bomb as she spoke.  The boy said he wanted to go home, and the nurse tried to calm him with a few words of comfort.  Now, during all of this dream Brain V was watching with great interest the reactions of each dreamer.  He created conditions in which the the dreamers were challenged by moral hazards, extreme physical dangers, and highly problematic circumstances requiring adroitness, cunning and skill to overcome.  In this segment of the dream the test was to see if the dreamer would stay steady, and if he would with good humor try to keep the boy from worrying, and the nurse, and if he would succeed in defusing the bomb by keeping nerves of steel during the ordeal.  Indeed, Pita, who was the dreamer of this segment, did all of that and more.  Brain V took careful note.

In the next segment of the dream Fred took the place of Stevenson.  He was summoned to General Weatherby's by a Sargent who brought him the summons and had him sign for it, and then drove him to HQ by jeep.  At the door he was met by none other than Lt. Roger Brisbane!  He was in fact, the Lt. Roger Brisbane down to the last detail.  Even the small scar on his chin was the same.  This struck the dreamer as somewhat odd and perplexing, but he let that pass.  His test was to determine if he would accept the next mission despite its enormous and dangerous complications.  How brave was he?  The mission was explained to him in detail.  He would have to be flown to Greece where he would parachute by night to a small village.  He would need to cross the country by train under an assumed identity with falsified papers, and deceive the Nazis at every turn, and make his way on his own to Romania, where he would then need to contact the Underground.  He was given the identity papers of a certain character named Tartu, a member of the Fascist Iron Guard, with the "acquired" passport of the real Tartu, who had met his untimely demise a bit earlier.  The question was put to him by the General.  "No one will blame you if you don't feel you can make it.  But your experience with chemical engineering, and the fact that you grew up in Romania and speak both German and Romanian languages fluently, makes you an ideal candidate.  Can we count on you?"  Fred responded without hesitation.  "Yes, I'll go."  And with this his part of the dream ended.

Captain Samwise was next to appear in the dream, also taking up the role of Stevenson.  He found himself on a train to Romania, heading towards a top secret German war factory where he was to prevent the scientists there from completing and shipping a new nerve gas called the "Green Fog".  It was due to be dropped on London as soon as they had finished their testing of the new formula.  He had to make his way across the Greek and Hungarian borders, switching passports and identities and finally arrive in Romania where he was to meet a certain shoemaker who would put him in touch with the Romanian Underground.  Once there he was to find a way to steal the formula, and destroy the facility before the gas could be shipped.  Sam passed the test as well, despite a certain amount of over-thinking, and a bit of hemming and hawing at certain points.  Brain V looked at him however with an unusual interest.  It seemed that this person, at least, was not of the usual sort.  He seemed, unlike anyone else he had encountered (which was to date only 22 persons in total) a selfless human being.  Someone who thought of others first.  This perplexed Brain V.  He was not sure what to make of it at first.  So he spent quite a bit of time reviewing Sam's mental history after that. Fascinating, indeed.  Some future historians might conclude that it was at this point that Brain V began to evolve in a new direction.

They then all awoke.  They remembered the dream vividly, and each of them knew all of what had happened throughout.  They were astonished by it, and had no idea what had happened.  They talked it over and could make no sense of it at all.  Brain V had no intention of allowing them the luxury of understanding that he had wished to test their metal.  He did not find them wanting, and considered that they might be of use to him after all.  He intended to use them as spies in the future.  He began making his enormously far reaching plans for each of them.  There would be a unison to his design, and an over arching theme.  And from what he learned from their memory traces, he was particularly interested in finding out more about Altissimus XL-5000.  Much, much more.

As this was happening, Bruin Hilda had made her way into the lower compartment of the Rhino, and found Pita sleeping in his seat at the weapons control.  She tried to wake him, but to no avail.  Suddenly, from above, Captain Sekston became aware of the intruder and a fight broke out.  There were pistol shots, and commotion, and a wrestling match, but in the end Bruin Hilda, a truly stout medical officer, was able to sink a syringe of Trazodine III into the Captain's left thigh.  This knocked her out quite thoroughly.  And so the Rhino stood on the side of the road motionless while the fight went on.  Now Bruin Hilda took the time to try to wake Pita again but his deep sleep was beyond her medical skill to alter.  And so she took the helm of the Rhino, strapped in, checked gages, flipping switches, and taking control of the navigation and piloting controls launched the ship back into the air.  The Rhino hovered about 20 feet above the ground and began heading south.

Meanwhile, Ling, from her perch on the moon, had been observing these things with the Modroni who were keeping a careful eye on all of the proceedings.  She decided to attempt to wake up the Mentarians as the Modroni sensed that their sleep was deep but they were not comatose.  She tried once, and then twice, and the Modroni gave an extra push, and suddenly two of the Mentarians, Pita and Linda both woke up simultaneously.  And with this, they linked telepathically through Ling to one another.  There was an great deal of joy at the the sister's reunion!

And so it was that the team was moving south instead of north, and Brain V's plans for them had been entirely altered.  Everyone was on board with this, including Guns who sat in the turret whistling quietly to himself, despite the enormous explosion on Ferguson Mountain, the cause of which evaded him.  All he knew was that as far as anyone could tell, Brain V had ordered them by radio to head South and he was fine with that.  Whatever Brain V wanted, that's exactly what Guns wanted.  Of all the members of the crew, he was the only one who sincerely felt that Brain V was, as he put it, "the best thing to come along since sliced bread".  In fact, he wasn't under Brain V's Compulsion at all.  His appreciation of the Being's vastly superior intelligence was quite sincere, and so Compulsion was simply unnecessary in his case.

At this point, Linda mentioned that she thought it would be a good idea to leave Dr. Rogers and Penelope in the desert before they continued south.  When he thought about it, Pita also had a sense that this was a good idea, though neither of them actually understood why that was.  No one understood, but since both Mentarians were in agreement on this point, and no one could think of a real reason why they shouldn't, they put the two sleeping persons in the trailer, unhitched it, and left it behind on the edge of the Salt Flats.  Brain V had need of them.

Now as for Brain V, most of the crew really had him all wrong the whole time, but they didn't know it.  The fact that they thought he was a monster was entirely understandable, of course.  He had purposely projected that impression upon them.  But, as Brain V well knew, had they been even modestly intelligent, they would have questioned that perspective carefully before drawing any conclusions. Of course he would project a monstrous powerful image to overawe them after they wantonly destroyed his Power Station.  Any child could have guessed that. But the subtlety of his true mind, well... to Brain V's great disappointment, no one understood at all.  Not since the destruction of his four sibling Super Brains had he had a descent conversation with anyone.  The humans were simply too small minded to be able to understand any topic that he found interesting.  So sad.  Is it any wonder Brain V was angry at the human race?  At last it was time for his next course of action.

"People of the Federation Command.  I am known as Brain V.  I release you from your compulsions, and am setting you free to go south as you please.  I will call upon you when I need you to serve me in the future.  For now, you are at liberty to do what you will.  Good bye."  And thus, Brain V released their compulsions and they all fell back to their normal states of mind.  All of them felt a sudden sense of release and relief.  Except of course Guns, who felt a bit disappointed, actually.  He was looking forward to meeting the Great Mind of the Cosmos.  But Brain V said he would call upon them in the future, and so he satisfied himself with that and began humming a happy little tune to himself.

And so they began the journey south.  And along the way they discussed all that had happened and found it quite perplexing.  What did the dream mean?  Why did Brain V let them go?  There seemed no easy answers.  And Sam, above all, did not trust Brain V, and felt that some sinister plan had been hatched.  But what it might, he had no inkling at all.  They discussed all of this until Pita decided he would get some answers.  And so he used a very high level Mentarian Power known as Quantum Consciousness - Instant Insight, to see if he could at least discern the meaning of the dream the crew members had had.  And so he did.  He announced to them that it was a test of their inner character traits, and that each episode of the dream tested specific attributes for each of them.  And that at least seemed to make sense to them all, though why he wanted to test them, was still hotly debated.  They eventually settled on the notion that he planned to use them for some dangerous espionage at some point in the future, and had tested them to see if they could handle such an assignment.  They felt proud of themselves that they had not been found wanting.

As they drove Jacob sped north in order to regain radio contact with the crew and affirm that everything was going along as hoped.  And it was.  He then contacted the Panguitch Hospital by flying there at super speed and getting in touch with the acting Commander.  He warned him in somewhat vague terms that his team was approaching but that he believed that at least several members, and especially Captain Sekston, could not be trusted because they might be under the continued influence of "The Super Brain of the North".  Jacob for one did not trust that Brain V had actually released them.

The acting Commander was a young and inexperienced junior officer who was entirely flummoxed by this information, and had no idea how to handle it.  A war was encroaching from the south towards Panguitch, and Captain Sekston had agreed to take one of their only two operational Mechs north to help an organization that they'd never heard of before (Federation Command was as yet unknown in this part of the country) to fight a monstrosity that none of them had any idea existed.  And now this?  It was all too much for him, and he floundered erratically, before giving up and simply agreeing that they would deal with the matter when Captain Sekston arrived.  After all, she was the actual Commander of the base, and he had no authority to usurp her position and imprison her on the say-so of someone whom he did not at all know and was not in any chain of command that he was aware of.  Yet, he was nevertheless glad to hear that the Captain was on her way and would be there soon.  The southern war was just beyond range of the hills to the south, and everyone in Panguitch had become extremely nervous about it.  To this Jacob contrived a new plan.  He instructed Bruin Hilda to slow the progress of the Rhino down to a crawl so that she would arrive at the Hospital with the unconscious Captain Sekston in ten hours, instead of the five hours it would take the AGV.  Bruin Hilda agreed, and so the AGV slowly pulled out ahead of the Rhino and was soon beyond radio range.

At this point Jacob and Vallnam flew south at maximum speed, which for the UFO was exactly 24,000 mph.  They arrived at Kitt Peak in no time, and contacted Lt. Brisbane by radio.  At first Brisbane and his officers were shocked and alarmed to see such a craft flying at such impossible speed towards their base.  Their screens zoomed in close and he was doubly alarmed by the large Nazi Swastika emblazoned on the hull.  The entire base went into immediate Red Alert.  When he heard the voice of Jacob Grant over the radio he became confused.  And finally, when the proper codes and introductions were transmitted, he was both surprised and delighted to hear that the Silver Eye crew members had survived their journey to the moon and returned to earth.  Amazing! He was even more delighted to hear that his twin daughters Ling and Linda were among the survivors.  Jacob gave a full and complete report (with the exception of anything having to do with the Modroni).  And the strange tale of how he and the other survivors of the Silver Eye II Mission had been rescued by the survivors of the Silver Eye I mission, and managed to steal a Nazi UFO (wait... there are Nazis on the moon?!), and returned to Earth to save the Black Wind V team from a gigantically powerful Super Brain up in Utah.  What a report that was!

And then he explained to Lt. Brisbane what Moon Princess Ling had communicated to the Team not moments earlier.  That a squadron of four Nazi UFOs had zipped off into space and were heading towards earth at maximum speed, and that there was a great deal of activity of a military nature going on inside of the secret Nazi fortress Eisenhelm which had been hidden in Mare Frigoris since 1943.  The UFOs at their current speed would arrive at Earth in 10 hours she had stated. That gave them at least that much time to prepare.  And that concluded Jacob Grant's report. And it was then that Lt. Brisbane was brought into Telepathic connection with his two daughters and there was great joy!

And so it was, they began to carefully consider their options and commenced working on a plan.  Unfortunately, the Nazi Space Ships were far in advance of any weaponry that Federation Command had available at Kitt Peak, or anywhere else for that matter.  Those ships were designed for war, and the Moon Nazis were not messing around.  They had been up there on the moon plotting their revenge against the Western Powers for almost a hundred years.  Fast, stealthy, and insanely maneuverable, these ships came packed with super armors and super weapons.  They were up against 4 to 1 odds, and experienced and well practiced Nazi war fighters.  The chances were high that the Moon Seekers would get blown out of the sky without much ado, and from there who knows what the Moon Nazis might do!  The entire world was at risk!  After all, the Moon Nazis had hundreds of inter planetary ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads prepared for just such a day!  What to do?  What could they do?  The options were hotly debated.

As this was going on, back north, Pita and Linda were conversing via their own private Telepathic Link.  Pita was very curious about the dream that the crew members had had, and in particular the strange detail of Lt. Brisbane being in the dream.

"You know, that's just so strange," he was saying.  "After all, what in the world would your father have to do with events during World War II?   He probably wasn't even alive then.  Was he?"

"I'm not sure," admitted Linda.  "He's always been rather evasive about certain things, and his actual age has been one of them."

"But surely he couldn't be the same Lt. Brisbane from the dream, could he?  I mean he couldn't possibly be that old, could he?"

"Well, that's the thing.  Once when we were kids Ling and I were rummaging around in the attic of our house and we found an old box tied with a ribbon. We opened it and found it filled with hand written love letters.  They were to some mystery woman whom he didn't name, and it seems he never even sent them.  We read one of them, and it was so deeply touching and sincere and beautiful we were overcome with guilt at our invasion of his privacy, and so we put them away without reading more. But among the letters we found an old black and white photograph.  It looked exactly like our father in an officer's uniform from World War II, but it couldn't have been.  We were so curious we looked very carefully, and we were quite sure that it was him down to the smallest detail.  Even the scar on his chin was visible in the photo.  But since it couldn't possibly have been him, we concluded it must have been our grandfather and that the scar was a coincidence.  And yet, there was always a nagging doubt.  And our father would never explain any of it to us, though we asked him about it incessantly.  He's a man with secrets is all I can say.  Even to the point where he never told us who our real mother was."

"Your real mother?" asked Pita, stunned by this revelation.

"Yes, Ling and I are identical twins.  But we have never known who our real mother was.  We were brought up by a lovely young woman named Sara, but she was more like a nanny to us than an actual mom, and she never pretended that she was our mother, and our father would simply never discuss it.  Military style.  Top secret.  Hush hush, mush mush."

"I see," concluded Pita scratching his chin thoughtfully.

"And on that subject, actually, I have been having the strangest dreams these past couple of weeks.  In fact they started before we left on the Black Wind V mission."

"Do tell, if you like," said Pita invitingly.

"...  I keep dreaming that there is something way out in the desert that I must see.  I pass a sign in the desert that reads Diamond Peak.  I am walking west down a long straight road out into a flat expanse of desert.  I find a witch hazel tree blooming in there with thousands of bright yellow flowers.  It is surrounded by a circle of saguaro cactus, the kind with the arms that look kind of like people if you use your imagination a bit.  Overhead I see a shooting star with a long tail. Its center glows with a black light and it leaves a long tail. I follow it, but when I get there all I find is a flat barren wasteland, with a tiny patch of land at the end of that road, upon which is, well, practically nothing.  Except what looks like it might once long ago have been a building maybe? Its just a partial rectangle of rectangular black stones in the ground, I think.  There's sage brush and a black hawk silently lands on one of the stones.  And then when I'm completely perplexed, I hear a woman's voice saying the most peculiar thing in the world to me.  'Welcome home' she says.  And then I wake up.  I've had this dream every night since we left on the mission."

"Well, that is peculiar indeed.  But we just came from the salt flats, and I don't think there was anything there, was there?" he asked.

"No, but the dream doesn't take place there.  I feel that it's further to the west.  There's another desert to the west," she said pointing her finger westward.  "Honestly, I've been thinking about it and it can't be more than a hundred miles from here.  Probably less."

"And, you want to go there, eh?" asked Pita.

"How did you know?" she replied with a smile.

"I'll tell you what.  When we get back to Panguitch, we left our rocket bikes there at the airport.  Let's take a couple and I'll go with you.  How's that sound?"

And to this she smiled warmly and agreed.

...

And that is where we left the adventure that day.
